Mentor Wins Third Summary Judgement of Patent Infringement Against Cadence

WILSONVILLE, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 28, 2002--Mentor Graphics Corporation (Nasdaq:MENT) today announced it had won a third summary judgement of patent infringement, the latest for its patent #5,754,827, against the Mercury and Mercury-Plus product lines of Cadence Design Systems' (NYSE:CDN).

The Court also rejected a motion of patent invalidity by Cadence on this patent. These rulings come in Mentor's patent infringement and theft of trade secrets case against Cadence, which is scheduled for trial on Jan. 6, 2003.

"We are pleased to receive yet another summary judgement of patent infringement against Cadence Design Systems. We have long asserted that our case against Cadence is quite strong, and are gratified that the court appears to concur," said Gregory K. Hinckley, president of Mentor Graphics.

Responding to a lawsuit that Cadence had published that it had filed today, Mentor also noted that the Federal District Court and the Court of Appeals had both rejected all of Cadence's previous claims against Mentor in 2000 and 2001.

"While we have not yet received a copy of today's complaint, we believe these claims against Mentor are old news -- they date prior to June 2000 -- and have been twice rejected by the courts," continued Hinckley. "We are disappointed that Cadence would choose to disparage us by re-asserting previously rejected claims. Judge William Alsup of the Northern District Court of California (Docket # C98-00762 WHR (EDL)) ruled in June 2000 that there was no evidence of any Mentor wrongdoing. This ruling was then upheld on appeal in 2001. We would expect that based on these existing rulings this case shall be dismissed."
